Artist Statement Camping and hiking in Canada's National Parks and other secret places in Northern Ontario inspired, taught and challenged my paintings. The intent is to share the experience and sensations of 'being there'. Stand back and the subject looks realistic. Stand close, these are Nature's abstractions. Thick paint applied with palette knife sculpts the purity and authenticity of natural surfaces. Various textures, strokes, colors and values are layered, contoured and glazed to persuade tangible realism. Boulders, bodies of water and trees have uneven surfaces, varying textures and contain a multitude of colours. These natural places are works of art unto their own and I hope the viewer will experience them up close and personal as I have.
